obama promising the nation we will get to the bottom of this. susan candiotti this morning on the first steps that are underway in this growing, very large investigation. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning, john. yes, there are a lot of active leads to follow up on, many, many witnesses to talk with. remember, they've got all kinds of surveillance video that they've collected from buildings right around where those explosions went off, that they will be closely examining for any clues, not to mention cell phone videos that they are surely collecting from all kinds of people who were taking videos, not only after the incident occurred but, of course, might have had photographs or videos before the explosions and the blasts went off. they'll be looking for any clues and suspicious activities before that. they're examining not only the exploded devices for more information but also the unexploded devices to try to learn more about this. this investigation is being led by the fbi working with the boston police department. of course, help from other agencies including the bureau
are playing instruments and putting down flags to pay tribute to the victims. >>> and president obama ordered the white house flag lowered to half staff today to honor those hurt in the explosions. and he also asserted the nation's strength in the face of this tragedy. >>> american people refused to be terrorized. because what we saw yesterday in the aftermath, the stories were of kindness, generosity, and love. the exhausted runners who kept running to the hospital to give blood. and those who stayed to tend the wounded, some tearing off their clothes to make tourniquets, and the men and women still treating them at some of the best hospitals. so if you want to know who we are, and america is, and how we respond to evil, that is it, selflessly, compassionately. >>> and cars were towed from the streets around pennsylvania avenue, ahead of the emancipation day parade. more on how the country is reacting. >> reporter: jim, the nation's capitol is home to all sorts of big public events and places. today was just a little different. from quiet moments at the korean war memorial, tourists at the n
that at this juncture except that he is in the hospital. president obama has addressed the nation and promised justice. but he made one mistake. the president called the attack a tragedy. it was not. it was a vial act of violence. designed to kill innocent people, including children. i was just in boston yesterday, and this makes me sick! so far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. perhaps it's a coincidence but this week marks the anniversary of attacks in oklahoma city, columbine, colorado, and virginia tech. also the waco assault in 1993. joining us now from washington congressman peter king, a member of the house homeland security committee. so, congressman, what can you tell us tonight? >> well, as you said, bill, this is absolutely horrific. it's detestable and has only the marks of a terrorist attack. in fact, the way it was carried out and to me there is no doubt in my mind that this is a terrorist attack. i know there is a person of interest, i guess they are calling him now. but, to me, this reminds me very much of the attack on times square in 2010 by shahzad and also we have t
and shrapnel packed in pressure cookers. hidden inside black duffel bags. president obama will travel to boston on thursday to speak at an interfaith service. today, he vowed to find those responsible and labeled the bombings an act of terrorism. >> this was a heinous and cowardly act. and given what we now know about what took place, the fbi is investigating it as an act of terrorism. any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror. it will take time to follow every lead and determine what happened. but we will find out. we will find whoever harmed our citizens and we will bring them to justice. >> today we also are getting new video of the actual explosions. including the only tape we've seen taken by a woman actually running in the race. [ explosion ] . >> and new radio calls from first responders reveal the chaotic moments just after the explosions. >> we have reports of two explosions here. we have at least a dozen people with serious injuries. >> at least two explosions. a dozen serious injuries, a multiple injury incident. >> authorities are now asking anyone

is former secret service agent for barack obama, dan is with us. welcome back. one of the things i was thinking of today, and i know this is your area of expertise and having worked at the secret service and having protected barack obama, do you think as a matter of course being the boston marathon that they had bomb sniffing dogs prayer to the marathon? >> right, but we are assuming the bombs were placed there today when the security cordon was set up. but what if you got in before it was set up and pro placed an explosive. pennsylvania avenue doesn't have any devices but when he walked down we had the entire cordon set up. so don't assume they were put there today. >> what would be the process, then, as it relates to law enforcement when they have a big crowd like this? i assume you have to have bomb sniffing dogs going in and out at some point, right? >> right. but what we would do in the secret service and i don't know how practical for an event like the marathon, you have to clean the area out first. sweep it with the dogs, the explosives personnel from the military would look
to trigger the dual explosions. president obama did something today he didn't do yesterday. he called it an act of terrorism. >> this was a heinous and cowardly act, and given what we now know about what took place, the fbi is investigating it as an act of terrorism. any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror. >> well, there's still so much we don't know. who did this? no one knows. why? was it an act of domestic terrorism or foreign? was this the work of an individual or a group of people? despite the stepped up police presence at the site, despite the advanced frenzices used by the investigators, despite all the cell phones we're using, all those videos out there, there's no guarantee who is responsible for this will be discovered any time soon. it took nearly two years, let's remember, for the fbi to locate and arrest the unabomber, two decades, rather. the unabbomber. let's begin this hour with former cia counterterrorism director, larry johnson. your thoughts about this kind of challenge and the working relationships among the various agencies, f
the full weight of justice. jon: president obama on the air just hours after the twin explosions in boston to reassure the nation. he also called the governor of massachusetts and the mayor of boston to offer support making it clear that his administration is mobilizing its full resources to help in the investigation and provide security as well. more on the white house response, let's bring in david drucker, senior editor at roll call. david, we are going to be hearing from this president in just about 20 minutes. the white house has scheduled some kind of a statement from the president at 11:30 eastern time. we don't know obviously what he will say, perhaps more of the kind of thing we heard yesterday. a president has to wear many hats, has to shoulder a lot of responsibilities, but being the leader of an emotional and frazzled nation at a time like this has to be among the most weighty. how is he doing? >> i think he's doing pretty good. the president hasn't always hit the mark in situations like this. near incidents that didn't happen. this time i thought he hit it perfectly. he showed
and thorough analysis. >> and president obama is planning to travel to boston on thursday to attend an inner faith service for the bombing victims. one of those victims is a local preschool teacher. 29-year-old erica branock of cockeysville is recovering from serious injuries from the blast. >> reporter: 29-year-old erica branock was in boston, to watch and cheer on her mom, carol phillips downing, who was running in the marathon. erica, her sister and brother- in-law were all at the finish line when the bombs went off. [ explosion ] branock, a howard county native, who teaches at a towson preschool, sustained extensive injuries to her legs and feet, according to the reports from her family. >> the latest we have heard from her mom is that she is going back into surgery this morning am she has severe injuries to both of her legs. and they were working on, i believe, reconstructing her right foot this morning. >> reporter: they also say her sister's legs are broken and her brother-in-law suffer severe burns. erika's facebook page is filled with messages of concern and support, as her friends
to half-staff, president obama praises those who rush to aid the injured. >> you want to know who we are? what america is? we respond to evil. that's it. selflessly, compassionately. unafraid. >> good day, i'm andrea mitchell live in washington. the fbi and intelligence agencies are involved in an intensive search for evidence and we have new details, breaking news about the explosives used in the boston bombings, joining me now, nbc news justin correspondent pete williams and michael leiter. pete, ha have you learn about the bombs themselves? >> well, what we're told by authorities, andrea, is that they're crudely made. they appear to have been assembled inside a pressure cooker. it may be some of our younger viewers don't know what that is, but in the olden days when you wanted to make something tender, you put it in this pot with a tight lid on it. and the steam wouldn't escape and you could build up pressure and things cook faster in them. the premicrowave days. inside a pot like this, a pressure cooker is assembled the device. it includes a low-power explosive. something like black
that their subordinates comply with the laws of war. president obama has committed to observe the geneva conventions through an executive order, but a future president could change it by the stroke of a pen. congress, one of our recommendations, needs to work with the administration to strengthen the torture statute, the war crimes exact the uniform code of military justice to remove loopholes that allow torture to occur. in terms of cia, we did not have access to classified information. this is the reason we're asking the administration to review much of the classified information to see what can be released without compromising national security and to provide more transparency and light on how the policy decisions were made. dr. david gushy would be happy to answer questions when we conclude about the responsibility and how the absence of clear standards left troops on the front line in an untenable position. on the question of effectiveness of torture, there is no persuasive evidence in the public record that the widespread use of torture against suspected terrorists was necessary; that is, that
